Poovar is a small coastal village in Thiruvananthapuram, district of Kerala state, south India. The beach separates the river from the sea. The Poovar Island here is a popular tourist destination.
Historians believe that the ancient 'Ophir' where the ships of the biblical king Solomon arrived is modern day Poovar. 'Ophir' was a trading centre for timber, sandalwood, ivory and spices in its heyday.
It is also believed that the Jesuit Missionary, St. Francis Xavier, visited Poovar in the 16th century
Poovar lies very close to Vizhinjam, a natural harbor and an estuary connects it with the sea during high tide. Poovar is abundant in coconut groves. Being a coastal village, fishing is the main occupation here.It's natural beauty is conducive to making it a popular tourist spot.
